Direktør i Selskabet, Charlotte Flindt Pedersen, modererer diskussionen.

(Billetpris for ikke-medlemmer: 90 kroner.)

Filmen vandt hovedprisen “Best World Documentary” på Sundance Film Festival 2018.

English version:

On 19 March we are screening the award-winning documentary ‘Of Fathers and Sons’ in collaboration with CPH:DOX. The documentary, in which we follow the coming-of-age of two boys in a radical Islamic family in Syria, is followed by a debate on masculinity in the Middle East with DIIS researcher and Middle East expert Helle Malmvig. This debate is moderated by the director of The Danish Foreign Policy Society, Charlotte Flindt Pedersen.

About the film:
Born as a warrior? Martyr dreams as a goodnight story in a both shocking and deeply human film about family life as an ISIS warrior in Syria. Two men are relaxing in a sparsely decorated room after a long day in the battlefield. A group of young boys are running around noisily while laughing, like 10-year-olds do. But these boys are the sons of the ISIS warriors who are relaxing in the room. Their goodnight stories consist of tales from the war and about martyrs, who have sacrificed themselves as suicide bombers. When the goodnight stories are finished, their fathers kiss and hug them and say ‘I love you’ before the lights are turned off. The boys want to be like their fathers, and several of them are named after people, who would be categorized as terrorists by most people, but who are considered heroes here. Syrian filmmaker Talal Derki lived with the ISIS warrior Abu Osama’s family for more than two years, and his both shocking and deeply human ‘Of Fathers and Sons’ gives us a unique look at the surprising tenderness that hides under the feared black flag of the Islamic State of Syria. For even if you love death more than life, the love for your children is greater still.

The documentary won the main prize in the category “Best World Documentary” at Sundance Film Festival 2018.
